Facet joints are located between each vertebra in your spine. These small joints provide flexibility and stability to your back. Over time, the cartilage that is in between the facet joints gradually wears away. This results in friction and can contribute to chronic pain.
Causes
Arthritis and general wear and tear contribute to facet syndrome. In younger patients, overuse or injury may be the cause. You might be at an increased risk of facet syndrome if you are overweight, because of the extra load the facet joints have to support.
Symptoms
The symptoms of facet syndrome depend on where the affected facet joints are located. For example:
Treatments
A facet joint injection can deliver anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain in the joints. This method of pain relief acts quickly and can last for extended period. Other treatment options include a nerve block and radiofrequency ablation, which numbs the affected nerves and blocks pain signals from reaching the brain.
